What is the Value of Art in 2019?

ARTIQ and the Creative Industries Federation are bringing leaders from the art world together to debate the value of art in 2019. The discussion forms part of ARTIQ’s annual Queer Frontiers exhibition, which showcases work by LGBTQ+ artists and allies.

Art – in all its forms – has always been a way for enlightened miscreants and sophisticated oddballs to enchant, intrigue and infuriate society at large.

And since the beginning of recorded history, philosophers and dilettantes have debated art’s purpose and meaning.

Should art reflect or challenge societal values? Should art encourage furious discussion about what it means to be human, today? Or should art be an object of beauty belonging to the privileged few?

These questions are not new.

But 2019 has stirred up further turbulence within debates on the value of art.

New voices have emerged in the art world as values shift and awareness grows around pride, community and social progress. These artists play to new audiences, who implore artists and curators for experiences and Instagram opportunities. And shifts in the art market – which sees buyers emerge from once improbable places – are offering artists the opportunity to sell direct to client and make their own way in the art world.

Join the debate on 10 July at 8-10 Brewer Street, 6pm to 8pm.
Entry is free to guests of the Creative Industries Federation and ARTIQ. We encourage a donation to akt and Switchboard LGBTQ+ on arrival.
